Serve Day (Maundy Thursday)
Today we remembered Maundy Thursday by serving others just as Christ served his disciples.
As a 51AVƵ community we celebrate and remember the Last Supper Jesus had with his disciples on the night he was betrayed. Maundy Thursday specifically recalls how the son of God stooped to wash the feet of his disciples, and we remember how we are likewise called to wash one another’s feet.
Today, as a school, we followed in that example. Middle and Upper School students spread out across Smith and Cherokee County to serve others. We washed cars for the Bullard Police and Fire Deparments. We beautified our local parks in Bullard. We served at food banks in Tyler and Jacksonville, cleaned yards for those in need, and cared for pets and animals in crisis (Four advisory groups worked today at the East Texas Food Bank. Our Brook Hill group broke an all-time record for the most food processed during a volunteer period! 13,560 bags of beans, rice, and pasta were filled. 678 boxes of food were created. In the “salvaged food” area, 6 pallets of 27,120 meals were processed!). We cleared and cared for land at local ministries like Elijah’s Retreat and Pine Cove and even helped at the Children’s Park in Tyler. We spent the day caring for children and the elderly.
We hope that days like this are memorable for our students and that through the act of serving others instead of themselves, they become more like Christ and embody his love more fully.
