Making an Excellent Impression in Art 1

Art 1 students are in the middle of their printmaking unit. Students are creating reduction prints with linoleum blocks. Tons of thought and effort go into this art form. First students develop an idea and draw an image. Next they transfer their drawing to a linoleum block and carve it with a carving tool called a gauge. Next students learn to ink their printing plates and finally burnish their printing plate until all the ink is evenly transferred to the paper. Students print at least 10 impressions onto paper of their linoleum block using different colored inks, different colored paper and different kinds of papers. Next, students carve more from the original plate, re-ink the plate and print over the first print. Students are creating some really cool and fabulous pieces! After all the experimentation and effort with the printing plate, students will choose their very best print and use a technique called chine colle’ to mount the final image to be framed. Finally, students will sign and number their prints in series. The work is amazing! It will be on display in the halls in Ornelas, Lauderdale and Founders as soon as the unit is finished.
