Like a Pro
This week was filled with a variety of activities for Mrs. Mize and Mr. Johnson’s middle school SPARC trip. Students traveled around the Tyler area hearing from many different professionals about how to be a Pro in their respective industries and trades. Following is a break down by day of the activities the students participated in throughout the week.
Monday– Tiger Rock Martial Arts Academy and Professional Clown
Self Defense– During this time students heard from two leveled black belt professionals about the importance of self-defense, how to be aware of potentially dangerous situations, and how to spot potential predators or people whose intent is harm. Students learned how to escape multiple grips, how to punch with either a fist or an open hand properly, how to duck and escape, and how to properly fall. The instructors also talked about the importance of being aware of surroundings at all times and how to avoid potentially dangerous people and situations.
For those looking to deepen their knowledge and refine their techniques, exploring martial arts schools like can be a great next step. These schools offer structured programs that go beyond basic self-defense, teaching discipline, physical fitness, and advanced techniques in a supportive environment. By enrolling in such programs, students can continue their journey of personal growth and skill development while gaining the confidence that comes with mastering martial arts.
Professional Clown– Students spent the second half of the day back at school with a professional clown. David McCullough, a.k.a. Korn Pop, is a local clown that travels all over the state, the country, and even internationally as a variety of clown characters performing magic shows, comedy skits, stilt entertainment, and making just about anything you can imagine with balloons. He talked to the students about how he found his way into the professional clown circuit and about how he has made a career out of doing what he loves, therefore he does not spend a moment doing work. He shared the verse 2 Timothy 1:6-7 which says, “For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” He encouraged the students to know and recognize their gifts and use those gifts boldly to work for the Lord. He concluded his session by showing students a few tricks of the trade and by making a few balloon goodies.
Tuesday- Sign Country and Painting
Sign Country– Students spent part of the day with Mr. Craig Gardner of Sign Country learning the process of making signs for promotional material as well as the art of t-shirt making. Students were able to see the software and the art work that goes into designing signs and t-shirts and were able to make their own sign. Then, students moved into the t-shirt making area where they were shown how to make screens for t-shirts, then apply and seal the ink, dry, and enjoy! Students were even able to make two of their own shirts!
Painting– Students spent the other half of the day with Mrs. Judy Seamands from Wall Work in Jacksonville learning how to paint their very own rendition of Brook Hill Founder’s Hall Starry Night. Mrs. Seamands taught the students how to mix colors and paint on a canvas.
Wednesday– Tyler Junior College
Students started out the day at the brand new, state of the art Nursing Building complete with hospital rooms, operating rooms, scrub room, waiting room, and mock house setting simulators where they heard from a variety of medical field professionals. Students were able to learn about physical and occupational therapy and were able to participate in therapy exercises. Students were taken to a mock scrub and operating room where they learned what it takes to be an operating room technician and were even able to scrub into a surgery. Next, students were taken to a hospital room simulator where they were able to examine a $75,000 dummy that was able to breath, had a heartbeat, could talk, and even had mock veins for drawing blood among other abilities.
After leaving the nursing building, students were taken to the West TJC campus where they were able to see a 3-D printer, talk with the small business developer director, meet the Game Face founder (the winner of Shark Tank not too long ago), get their very own Game Face, see how a machine can cut out different promotional materials using wood, talk with the fire academy director, get to experiment with a thermal imaging machine, participate in a live setting off of an airbag, and finally got a tour of the brand new Luminate academy building where all different kinds of electrical engineers get their start.
Thursday– The Caldwell Zoo
Students were able to go behind the scenes at the Zoo to learn about all of the different types of professional jobs associated with Zoo Keeping. Students learned about the botanists that grow and nurture all of the plants at the zoo and make sure they are safe for the animals. Students were able to see where all of the zoo animals sleep at night. Also, students were able to see the kitchen where all of the food is prepared as well as the hefty weekly menu. They even got to go into the huge refrigerator and step inside the -10 degree freezer! Last, the students got to visit the Zoo hospital where all of the animals receive yearly physicals. They got to see the X-ray room and the surgery room and received a lesson on what it takes to be a professional animal doctor.
