A Long Way in a Short Time
From the desk of Shawn Rhoads, Director of Residence Life:
Every year Brook Hill pours a ton of time, effort and resources into making our Boarding Program better than the year before. This intentionality has resulted in huge strides for each year that the program has been in existence. This is in large part the reason why a twelve-year-old boarding program can be so advanced in its systems, programs and overall quality level. From the days when we had two house parents, two dorms and two buses the enhancements and advancements that have occurred have been remarkable. Take just this year for example. Some of the improvements that have been realized include…
- Bringing on Flik Food Services, out of Manhattan, for all meals provided
- Adding more Residence Life staffing during the school day, after school, evenings and on weekends to increase the level of care that our students receive, including an afternoon errand driver
- Expanding the weekly opportunities both on and off campus for students (students have no less than fourteen opportunities to go to off-campus locations each week)
- Building a Residence Life Suite in Lauderdale Hall as an operations center as well as a fun location for students to hang out
- Enhanced communication methods via media monitors in each house and outside the Residence Life Suite
- Additional Cinema trips every weekend
- Bringing on a dedicated College Guidance Counselor
- Adding a Friday afternoon tutoring program through which boarding students can earn community service hours while at the same time helping Middle School students academically
- Opening the fitness center at least five nights each week
- Expanding our entertainment options list
- Adding two new 40 passenger buses and 2 new 9-passenger vans to transport more students, affording them the means to take in more excursions, activities and opportunities
- Introducing a Boarding Buddy program to couple each student with a Brook Hill faculty or staff member or Brook Hill family
- Opening up more entertainment spaces on campus like the Residence Life Suite balcony and the Upper Deck, where we hold outdoor movies, luncheons and camp fires.
- Adding more professional sporting events like FC Dallas Soccer and the Dallas Mavericks and later this month we will go to a Texas Rangers baseball game
It is annual advancements like these, which we strive to implement on a continual basis, that ranks our relatively young boarding program among the top tier boarding school across the entire country. These are the kinds of developments our boarding students and their families can expect from Brook Hill in the years to come.
